IT Project Management Checklist

Looking for a quick outline on I.T. project management? Many of you will work in environments where the IT project management methodology is set and well defined. However if you have a “looser” environment (or no PM methodology at all, you may want to refer to this IT manager project management checklist. If you’re struggling in your projects, you should definitely use some of these templates to tighten up your control of the project.

This IT project manager checklist is in use at Weber State University and includes templates that you can download and use.

As you see from the screenshot each deliverable has an accompanying template as well as a brief description of the project managers duties.

The basic deliverables are:

  • Review the proposal
  • Create charter
  • Identify the project team members
  • Conduct the project kickoff meeting
  • Create weekly team agendas
  • Conduct status reporting (hopefully with a project dashboard)
  • Creating and running a project plan or work breakdown structure
  • Tracking risk with a plan
  • The actual project management
  • Quality assurance testing
  • Project acceptance
  • Delivery and transition into production environment
  • Project closing
  • Lessons learned
  • Documentation
  • Celebration!

As an aside, note how documentation falls to the very end. This of course is not good practice and indeed the documentation should be baked into the project much earlier on. However, as most of you know, documentation unfortunately falls to the wayside in many projects.

Hope you find these project templates helpful. Many may feel that these are rudimentary but if you don’t have a process in place, it’s a great place to start.
